Pottery stamps are small tools you press into soft clay to leave a pattern, a letter or your maker's mark. For most home potters the best start is one decorative stamp from MKM, one letter set (Xiem's attachable letters or Chinese Clay Art's rubber letters) and, once you sell or gift work, a custom stamp of your initials or logo. This guide compares current clay stamps for pottery from maker and dealer listings; we did not test them, and we note where a maker does not publish a detail such as letter height.
You will see the same tools sold as clay stamps, ceramic stamps or pottery stamps; the names are interchangeable. Stamps cover two jobs. Texture stamps repeat a motif to decorate a mug, plate or slab. Maker's mark stamps (also called chops) sign the foot of a pot so people know who made it. You can use the same tools for both, but the best choice for each is different.

MKM Large Round Stamp: best decorative pottery stamp
MKM Pottery Tools in Appleton, Wisconsin, is the name most potters think of for stamps for pottery. Its Stamps4Clay line comes in round sizes from 1 cm to 6 cm, square sizes from 1.5 cm to 6 cm, plus triangle, snowflake and new 4 cm curve-top shapes. The 4 cm Large Round (Scl) range alone had 175 designs on MKM's site when we checked, from leaves and birds to Celtic knots and mandalas.
MKM says its stamps are carved from wood in its own factory, with bevel-carved edges so they release easily from clay, and finished with tung oil for durability. It also says none of its patterns are laser cut, which it says can leave a burned wall that pulls up the edge of the design. The 4 cm (1.5 in) size is a good first stamp: big enough to read on a mug, small enough to fit between handle and rim. The curve-top shape is worth a look for curved walls.
- Size: 4 cm (1.5 in) round; MKM lists 1.6 by 1.6 by 1.2 in overall (other sizes 1 to 6 cm)
- Designs: 175 in the Large Round range at time of checking
- Material: carved wood, bevel-cut edges, tung oil finish; carved at MKM's own factory, not laser cut (per MKM)
- Care: clean with water and a soft toothbrush (per MKM)
- Price band: about $12 per stamp at MKM in October 2026; check the live price
Pros
- Very wide choice of designs
- Several sizes and shapes
- Beveled wood edges release cleanly per the maker
Cons
- Costs add up if you want many designs
- Wood must dry fully between uses
Who should skip it: Potters who only want to sign their work; a letter set or custom chop does that job.
Xiem Attachable Letter Stamps: best pottery letter stamps for words
Letters are where many stamp sets fail: you press one at a time and the word ends up crooked. Xiem's attachable stamps are designed to join together, so you can build a word or a date and press it in one go. US dealer Krueger Pottery Supply lists 36-piece upper-case and lower-case sets, a 12-piece number set and 12-piece add-on sets for extra common letters.
This is the set to buy if you want to stamp names on personalized mugs, dates on commemorative pieces or short words on plaques. The add-on sets matter more than they seem: any word with repeated letters needs extras. All variations showed as out of stock at Krueger when we checked, so check another dealer or Amazon. Letter height is not given on the listing we read.
- Sets: 36-piece upper case (ALSS1U); 36-piece lower case (ALSS1L); 12-piece numbers (ALSS1N); 12-piece add-on sets
- Design: attachable so letters form a line
- Letter height: not published on the dealer listing we read
- Price band: about $9 for 12-piece sets and $20 for 36-piece sets at a US dealer in October 2026; check the live price
Pros
- Letters lock into a straight line
- Add-on sets for repeat letters
- Affordable
Cons
- Letter size not stated on the listing we read
- Stock was patchy when checked
Who should skip it: Potters who only need two or three initials, where a single custom stamp is faster.
Chinese Clay Art Rubber Letter Stamps: best budget letter set
Chinese Clay Art (CCA) sells 26-piece rubber alphabet sets on its own site in four sizes: 1 1/8 in, 1 1/16 in, 1/2 in and 3/8 in. Krueger Pottery Supply describes its CCA rubber stamps as attachable, so you clip several together to keep a word straight, and also stocks matching number sets.
The range of sizes is the main reason to pick these. A 3/8 or 1/2 in set suits a mug base or the back of a tile; the larger sets suit garden markers and house numbers. Rubber gives a softer edge than a carved stamp, and a set has one of each letter, so buy two if your name repeats a letter.
Size note: Chinese Clay Art lists its SL 10 sets at 1 1/8, 1 1/16, 1/2 and 3/8 in, while Krueger Pottery Supply lists CCA rubber letter sets at 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 1/8 in. They may be different set lines; check the size on the listing you buy from.
- Pieces: 26 letters per set (numbers sold separately)
- Sizes: 3/8 in to 1 1/8 in per CCA
- Material: rubber
- Price band: about $8 to $21 per set at CCA and a US dealer in October 2026; check the live price
Pros
- Low cost
- Several letter heights
- Clip-together design per the dealer
Cons
- One of each letter per set
- Softer edges than carved stamps
Who should skip it: Potters after crisp, deep lettering for a premium look, who may prefer MKM's font sets.
MKM Fonts4Clay Lucida: best premium alphabet
MKM's Fonts4Clay line takes the same carved approach as its decorative stamps and applies it to whole alphabets. The Lucida set is sold as separate upper-case and lower-case sets, and MKM also lists other font styles (Moms Fridge Notes, Prints Charming and Stone Carved) if you want a playful or rustic look.
At about $80 per case set it costs several times more than budget letters, so it suits potters who stamp words often, such as those who sell personalized mugs or make signs. The pages we read did not list set contents, letter height or material, so check the product page or ask MKM before ordering.
- Sets: Lucida upper case; Lucida lower case (sold separately)
- Other fonts: Moms Fridge Notes, Prints Charming, Stone Carved
- Letter height and contents: not published on the category page we read
- Price band: about $80 per set at MKM in October 2026; check the live price
Pros
- Several font styles
- Same maker as MKM's carved stamps
- Good for frequent lettering
Cons
- High price per set
- Size and contents not shown on the category page
Who should skip it: Occasional letterers and beginners, who will be fine with a $10 to $20 set.
DiamondCore Clay Impression Stamp Set: best add-on for carving tool owners
DiamondCore Tools is known for carving and trimming tools, and its clay impression stamps are designed to fit the stylus ends of existing DiamondCore carving tools. If you already own DiamondCore carvers, these add small repeat shapes without another handle on the bench. DiamondCore sells Clay Impression Stamp Sets 1 and 2, larger Geo Point and Geo Block sets, and 36 single stamps.
Small geometric impressions work well for borders, dotted rows and filling the background of carved designs. The collection page we read does not state the size or material of each stamp. If you do not own DiamondCore tools, check how the stamps attach before you buy.
- Fit: stylus ends of DiamondCore carving tools (per DiamondCore)
- Options: Clay Impression Stamp Sets 1 and 2; Geo Point and Geo Block sets; 36 individual stamps
- Size and material: not published on the collection page we read
- Price band: about $48 to $60 per set, singles about $3, at DiamondCore in October 2026; check the live price
Pros
- Pairs with tools many carvers already own
- Cheap single stamps
- Good for borders
Cons
- Most useful only if you own DiamondCore tools
- Size and material not stated
Who should skip it: Potters without DiamondCore carving tools who want a stand-alone stamp.
Chinese Clay Art Plastic Stamps, Flower Pattern: best cheap texture starter
If you want to try stamping before spending real money, CCA's plastic stamp sets are the cheapest way in. The flower pattern set (SE 07) has 12 stamps from 1 to 1.5 in, and CCA also sells an 8-piece ocean life set and a 12-piece zodiac animal set at similar prices.
They are a good way to learn how deep to press, how soft the clay should be and how a motif looks under glaze. Detail is simpler than MKM's carved designs, but for kids' projects, pinch pots and test tiles they do the job. Keep them separate from food prep items and wash them in water after use.
- Pieces: 12 (flower set)
- Size: 1 to 1.5 in
- Material: plastic
- Price band: about $6.50 to $7 per set at CCA in October 2026; check the live price
Pros
- Very low cost
- 12 designs
- Fine for learning and kids' projects
Cons
- Simpler detail than carved stamps
- Limited design choice
Who should skip it: Potters who already know they want a specific, detailed look.
Custom pottery stamps for a maker's mark
None of the stock stamps above will carry your own name or logo, so most potters who sell or gift work end up with a custom stamp. There are three common routes.
Order a custom stamp
Independent makers on Etsy and similar marketplaces sell custom pottery stamps made from your artwork, usually 3D-printed resin or plastic, laser-engraved wood or acrylic, or cast or machined metal. When you order, ask for the design to be mirrored (a stamp prints in reverse), a raised design deep enough to read in clay (ask the maker what depth they recommend), a size that fits the foot of your smallest pot, and a handle you can grip. Expect to pay more for metal than for printed plastic. Check reviews that mention clay specifically, not rubber ink stamps; a stamp built for ink paper is often too shallow.
How do I make my own stamp for pottery?
You can make a maker's mark in an afternoon. Roll a small cylinder of clay, let the end firm to leather hard, carve your initials into it in reverse with a needle tool or small loop, and bisque fire it. Bisque stamps are porous, so they release from damp clay well. Test the impression on a scrap slab before firing the stamp, and make two in case one breaks.
The same method works for decorative stamps: carve a leaf, a star or a simple pattern into the flat end of a clay plug or a small slab with a handle knob, and bisque it. Carve the design in reverse and deeper than you think, because shrinkage in the stamp and glaze on the pot both soften the image. You can also press found objects such as buttons, shells or seed heads into clay, but wash them first and keep anything you use with clay away from food prep.
Sign by hand
A needle tool signature or carved initials costs nothing and is a perfectly good mark. Many potters sign by hand until their work is consistent enough to justify a custom chop.
Pottery stamps buying guide
Size and where it goes
Measure the place you will stamp. A maker's mark usually goes on the foot ring or base, so 1 to 2 cm is common. Decorative stamps for mug walls work around 2.5 to 4 cm. Large 6 cm stamps suit plates, tiles and slab work. A stamp bigger than a flat area will rock and leave half an image.
Depth and edge
Deep, crisp designs read better after glaze, because glaze pools in the low areas and breaks on the high ones. Shallow designs can vanish under a thick glaze. If you plan to use a glossy or runny glaze, choose bolder motifs.
Material and durability
Rubber and plastic are cheap and easy to clean. Carved wood and metal hold crisp edges for years if kept dry between uses. Bisque stamps release well but can chip. Whatever you buy, rinse clay off in water, let the stamp dry fully and store it away from your scrap bucket.
Letters versus a custom chop
Buy letter stamps for clay if you stamp different words often. Buy or make a custom chop if you stamp the same initials or logo on every piece. A chop is faster and always lines up.
Stamps, rollers and carving
Stamps make single impressions. For continuous bands of pattern, see our guide to clay texture rollers. For hand-drawn detail, look at carving pottery and sgraffito pottery. If MKM interests you, our MKM pottery tools page goes deeper into the brand.
When to stamp clay
Stamp when the clay is soft leather hard: firm enough to hold its shape, soft enough to take an impression without cracking. Our leather hard clay guide shows how to judge that stage. On a thrown pot, hold one hand inside the wall behind the stamp so you do not dent the form. On slabs, many potters stamp while the slab is still flat and then build. If the stamp sticks, dust it lightly with cornstarch and brush the excess off the clay. Do not stamp bone dry clay; it can crack, and the mark will be faint.
Practice tip: keep a scrap slab beside you and test each stamp before you touch a finished pot. It shows you the pressure and clay softness that give a clean, full image.
After stamping, the piece dries, goes through a bisque firing and then glaze firing like any other work. If you are building a full tool kit, start with our guide to the best pottery tools.
